How to Become a Yoga Teacher: Finding the Right Yoga Teacher Training for You

Have you ever dreamed of becoming a yoga teacher but felt unsure where to start? You’re not alone. Many passionate yoga practitioners reach a point where they want to share their love of yoga with others, but navigating the world of yoga teacher training courses can be overwhelming.

After more than 25 years in the yoga and training industry, I’ve learned that there’s no “one-size-fits-all” approach to becoming a yoga teacher. The key is to find a yoga course that supports your unique goals, honours your individuality, and truly prepares you to teach confidently and authentically.

Step 1: Choose the Right Type of Yoga Teacher Training

To begin your journey, I recommend enrolling in a 200-hour yoga teacher training course that is Yoga Alliance certified. This is the international standard for foundational yoga training.

Be cautious of fitness-based yoga programs that only focus on the physical aspects. A well-rounded 200-hour training should include:

  • Yoga philosophy and history

  • Anatomy and physiology

  • Teaching methodology

  • Practice teaching and feedback

  • Ethics and professional development

A Yoga Alliance-registered training ensures that your course meets high-quality standards and is delivered by experienced, qualified educators.

Step 2: Look for Connection and Community

Whether you’re choosing an in-person yoga teacher training or an online yoga teacher training, connection and community are vital. Look for a program that offers live sessions, mentorship, and peer support, not just self-paced video modules.

From my experience, students who train in a supportive environment develop stronger teaching skills and deeper self-confidence. That’s why all My Tribe Yoga courses include guided sessions, small group mentoring, and ongoing support.

Step 3: Consider the Structure and Delivery of the Course

Intensive yoga trainings that compress everything into a few weeks can lead to information overload. In my years working in education and yoga training, I’ve seen that students retain information best when it’s delivered in manageable, bite-sized lessons over time.

At My Tribe Yoga, our unique delivery model is designed to help students truly absorb what they learn, resulting in high success rates and confident, capable graduates.

Step 4: Learn from Experienced Trainers

Yoga Teacher Training Theory

The quality of your yoga teacher training depends on who teaches it. Look for trainers with not only yoga experience but also backgrounds in education and adult learning.

I’ve spent many years designing and delivering training programs, supported by a degree in Education and Training and multiple teaching qualifications. When choosing your course, make sure your trainers have the depth of knowledge and passion to support your growth.

Step 5: Don’t Wait Until You’re “Perfect”

Many people hesitate to start yoga teacher training because they feel their personal practice isn’t advanced enough. But remember; you don’t need to be perfect to begin. Your practice will deepen throughout the training. Becoming a yoga teacher is about more than mastering poses; it’s about developing your voice, presence, and ability to guide others with authenticity.

During your yoga teacher training, you’ll practice teaching, receive feedback, and build the confidence to lead classes safely and effectively.

Step 6: After Your 200-Hour Training

certified students

Once you complete your 200-hour Yoga Alliance accredited course, you’ll be qualified to start teaching yoga classes and gain teaching insurance. This certification is your entry point into the world of professional yoga teaching.

However, learning never stops. Continue to develop your skills through advanced yoga courses and continuing professional development (CPD) programs. The Yoga Alliance provides a clear pathway for ongoing education and recognition, helping you grow as both a teacher and a practitioner.
